Worse than this, he follows a method which turns agricultural work into drudgery, and his sons and daughters forsake the farm home as soon as they are old enough to assert a little independence. Maimon stellt hier die transzendentale Deduktion Kants und das Beweisziel einer "Theorie der Erfahrung" in Frage und präsentiert eine Kombination der kritischen Philosophie Kants mit Spinozas, Humes und Leibnizens Systemen.

Salomon Maimons "Versuch über die Transzendentalphilosophie" aus dem Jahre 1790 ist aus 'Anmerkungen' zu Immanuel Kants "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" entstanden. Maimon, der das Werk des Deutschen zwar als unwiderlegbar, jedoch unzulänglich erachtete, verarbeitet hier Einflüsse unterschiedlichster Art: Mit einer Erneuerung skeptischer Argumente wendet er sich gegen die transzendentale Deduktion Kants und das Beweisziel einer "Theorie der Erfahrung" (Hermann Cohen).

So legt Maimon mit dem "Versuch über die Transzendentalphilosophie" eine radikale, zugleich auch produktive Kritik an Kants Philosophie vor, welche, so Johann Gottlieb Fichtes Überzeugung, dadurch "von Grund aus umgestoßen ist". Insbesondere innerhalb der Forschung zum deutschen Idealismus gebührt ihm daher hohe Aufmerksamkeit. Fichte beispielsweise entwickelte die richtungweisenden Ansätze Maimons in seiner Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre weiter. Jedoch enthält das Werk des litauischen Philosophen auch zahlreiche Argumente der späteren Kant-Kritik, wie etwa des Neukantianismus. Zudem gilt es, Maimons Synthese der kritischen Philosophie Immanuel Kants mit "Baruch de Spinozas, David Humes und Leibnitzens Systemen" auch als eigenständige Position, als "Vereinigungspunkt" der Philosophie zu würdigen.

Kant selbst war hinsichtlich des Werkes der Meinung, "daß nicht allein niemand von meinen Gegnern mich und die Hauptfrage so wohl verstanden, sondern nur wenige zu dergleichen tiefen Untersuchungen soviel Scharfsinn besitzen möchten, als Hr. Maymon" (aus einem Brief an Markus Herz).
